An Earth Discharge Rod is a safety device used to dissipate residual or induced electrical charges from high-voltage lines or equipment after they have been isolated from their power source. This ensures the system is at zero potential before maintenance begins.


IEC Standards and Compliance
Under IEC standards, these rods must undergo rigorous testing to ensure operator safety during high-voltage operations. 
  • IEC 61230: This is the primary standard for portable equipment for earthing and short-circuiting. It specifies requirements for the design, construction, and testing of earth rods and associated cables.
  • IEC 61235: Specifically covers insulating hollow tubes for electrical purposes, defining the dielectric and mechanical strength required for the rod's body.
  • IEC 60855: Often cited for the insulating sticks (hot sticks) used in these assemblies, focusing on fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) performance. 
  • Material: Most modern rods are constructed from Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) or epoxy resin through an automatic pultrusion process. This provides high dielectric strength and mechanical durability while remaining lightweight.
  • Voltage Ratings: Rods are categorized by their maximum system voltage, ranging from 11 kV to 550 kV.
  • Integrated Resistor (Optional): Advanced models include a non-linear carbon discharge resistor (typically around 20 MΩ) to control the flow of current, preventing sudden arcing or voltage surges during discharge.
Key Components:
  • Conductor Clamp: Often an "alligator" or "C-hook" type made of cast aluminium or copper alloy.
  • Earthing Cable: Highly flexible braided copper cable, usually between 6 mm² and 50 mm² in cross-section, with a transparent PVC sheath.
  • Telescopic Design: Many units feature a telescopic structure for adjustable reach (up to 20 feet) and easy storage.
